ATLANTA, March 22, 2005—Morehouse College is taking a different approach to Science and Spiritual Awareness Week.  This year’s theme, The Diet of Life: Feasting Upon the Light, will concentrate on the notion that you are what you eat.  Some of the world’s most forward thinkers on the subject will share their perspectives with Atlanta and the Morehouse community.  Morehouse students will also play a large role in the week.  Chapel Assistants for the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel will discuss everything from Contemplative Practices of the Black Church to the Science of Mind, which will analyze the unity of science and religion.

 

So, how does the food you eat affect your spirituality?  Dr. Lawrence Carter, dean of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, said that the correlation is simple. “The highly acidic diets of African Americans and Afro Caribbeans are the primary cause of diseases that affect minorities disproportionately including Type I and Type II diabetes, cancer, heart attack, stroke and hypertension,” said Carter.  “ Just as cleanliness is next to Godliness, the body is the temple of God.  We are spiritual beings and cannot have health or spirituality unless everything in us is cooperating.”

 

Prominent participants include Robert O. Young, microbiologist and nutritionist from the Innerlight Biological Research Center in San Diego and his wife, Shelley who will conduct a cooking demonstration during the week and Ronald G. Franklin, author of Chicken Soup for the African American Soul. The highlight of the week is on March 31st with the awarding of the Gandhi, King, Ikeda Community Builders Prize to Rabbi Michael Lerner, international peace activist, author, and founder of Tikkun Community and magazine.
